HI KIDS! 👋
WE HOPE YOU'RE DOING WELL!
TODAY WE WILL BE WORKING ON:

SCIENCE
HOW DO ANIMALS ADAPT?
ADAPTATIONS are physical features or behaviors that help organisms survive and reproduce in an environment. Adaptations are passed from generation to generation.
Examples of physical adaptation:
Ducks have webbed feet to swim better
The wings of penguins are small and strong to swim but they cannot fly and their feathers are covered in oil (protection from cold and helps them slide)
The leaves of the cactus turned into spines to not sweat (and lose water)
The legs of the whale turned into fins to swim
Polar bears have white fur to camouflage with the snow.
Animals have adaptations, such as camouflage, horns, shells, stingers, claws, quills, sprays, poisons, and escape behaviors, to PROTECT them from predators.
ANIMAL INSTINCTS are behaviors that animals inherit from their parents. Ex: ducklings are born with the instinct to always follow their mother.
HIBERNATION is a natural behavior for some animals that occurs when weather turns colder. It is a state of inactivity (mostly sleeping) to conserve energy. Ex: bears, marmots, snakes, etc.
During MIGRATION, animals travel to warmer locations that have better food supplies. Ex: whales and birds travel long distances.
- LEARNED BEHAVIORS are behaviors that do not come by instinct. Young animals learn from their parents by observation. Ex.: lion cubs learn how to hunt by watching their mother.
