HI KIDS! HOW ARE YOU? 😁

WE HOPE YOU'RE DOING WELL

TODAY WE WILL BE WORKING ON:

SCIENCE

ORGANISMS

  • All living things are called ORGANISMS.

  • Organisms do many LIFE PROCESSES:

  • Breathe

  • Take in energy (food)

  • Grow

  • Reproduce

  • React or sense

  • Move

  • Make waste

  • Non-living things can do some, but NEVER all of these processes.

Ex.: a car can move and make waste but it can`t grow or reproduce.

HOW ARE LIVING THINGS CLASSIFIED (GROUPED)?

  • Scientists sort all living things into different groups. Organisms in the same group have some common characteristics.

  • Scientists use a classification system to study, compare and identify living things.

  • The largest classification group is a KINGDOM. Before there were only 2: animal and plants. Now we have 6 kingdoms:

  • ANCIENT BACTERIA: one celled organisms and no nucleus. They can live anywhere: land, water, extreme heat or salty places. They make their own food.

  • TRUE BACTERIA: one-celled organisms and no nucleus. They live on land or water. Some can make their food and some cannot.

  • PROTISTS: most are one-celled organisms. They have a nucleus. They live in water and moist places. Most cannot make their own food, but some can. Ex: algae, amebas.

  • FUNGI: most are multi-celled organisms. Cells have nucleus and other parts. They live on land and cannot make their own food. Ex: mushrooms, yeasts, and mold.

  • PLANTS: multi-celled organisms with tissues and organs. Cells have nucleus and cell wall. Most live on land, but some in water. They make their own food using the sun’s energy. Ex: tree, cactus, rose, seaweed, etc.

  • ANIMALS: multi-celled organisms with tissues, organs and organ systems. They live in land or water. They cannot make their own food. Ex: worm, human, spider, jellyfish, turtle, etc.

HOW ARE ANIMALS CLASSIFIED?

  • Animals are divided in 2 big groups:

    • VERTEBRATES: animals WITH  BACKBONE.

    • INVERTEBRATES: animals WITHOUT BACKBONE.

  • VERTEBRATES: are divided into 5 groups:

Skin covering

Respiration

Offspring

(babies)

Habitat

(where they live)

Blood temperature

FISH

scales

gills

lay eggs

water

cold-blooded

AMPHIBIANS

smooth skin

gills (young),

lungs (adult)

lay eggs

water or land

cold-blooded

REPTILES

scales

lungs

lay eggs

mostly on land,

some in water

cold-blooded

BIRDS

feathers

lungs

lay eggs

mostly on land,

some in water

warm-blooded

MAMMALS

hair or fur

lungs

live babies

mostly on land,

very few in water

warm-blooded

BODY TEMPERATURE:

  • Warm-blooded: animals control their body temperature. Ex: Humans keep their body temperature at around 37°. Mammals and birds.

  • Cold-blooded: animals cannot control their body temperature. Their body temperature depends on the outside temperature. Fish, reptiles and amphibians.

  • INVERTEBRATES: most of the world’s animals are invertebrates.

Some major invertebrate groups are:

  • ARTHROPODS: their body is divided into sections and they have jointed legs. Their body is covered by a hard outer skin (exoskeleton) to protect it.  Ex.: spiders, crabs, insects, shrimp, etc.

  • SPONGES: sea animals with many pores.

  • SEA STARS: they have a star-shaped body and live only in the sea.

  • WORMS: smooth bodies made of segments. They live in water or land. Ex.: earthworms, leeches, tapeworms.

  • MOLLUSKS: they have muscular bodies. Most have a shell for protection. Ex: slugs, snails, octopus, squids.

  • JELLYFISH: they have jelly-like bodies and tentacles to catch food. They live only in water.

SEE YOU TOMORROW!
